A major sandstorm rolls through Ras Al Khaimah every summer, and several smaller ones throughout the year. Whether it is a shamal blowing down from the north-west or a localised dust event, the aftermath is consistent: fine sand on every outdoor surface, a visible film indoors, AC systems strained, and pools coated. The instinct is to grab a broom and start sweeping – but the order in which you tackle a post-sandstorm clean determines whether you finish in half a day or spend three days chasing the same dust around your home.

Priority 1: Don’t Track It Inside

Before any indoor cleaning, manage the boundary. Shake out every doormat outside. Use a hose or pressure washer (carefully) to rinse the area immediately outside your main entrances. A wet surface at the door traps incoming sand. Shoes come off at the door for the next 48 hours minimum.

Priority 2: Turn Off the AC (Briefly)

If visible dust is in the air indoors, turning the AC off for 30 minutes while you ventilate prevents the system pulling that dust into ducts where it will linger for months. Open windows and doors on opposite sides of the house to create cross-ventilation. Let the heaviest airborne dust settle onto surfaces where you can deal with it, rather than into vents where you cannot.

Priority 3: Windows and Window Tracks

Window tracks are where post-sandstorm cleans go wrong. Sand accumulates in the tracks and every future window-open action re-releases it. Vacuum tracks thoroughly with a narrow nozzle attachment, then wipe with a damp cloth. Do this before cleaning the glass – otherwise glass cleaning just transfers track sand onto the newly wet pane.

Priority 4: Work Top to Bottom Indoors

Start at ceiling height: dust ceiling fans, light fittings, high shelves and picture frames. Work down the walls to mid-height: door frames, skirting boards, artwork. Finally floors. Doing this in reverse order means the dust you lift from high surfaces resettles on the floors you just cleaned.

Priority 5: Soft Furnishings

Curtains, cushion covers, mattresses and upholstered sofas trap fine sand in their weave. Take curtains and cushion covers down and wash them. Vacuum mattresses with an upholstery attachment. Schedule a professional upholstery clean within a week if the storm was severe – by then DIY vacuuming has done most of what it can and the deeper embedded sand needs hot-water extraction.

Priority 6: AC Vents and Filters

Once the major dust has been cleared from the house, clean AC vent grilles and replace or wash filters. Skipping this step means your AC system will pull lingering sand through ducts for weeks. For severe sandstorms, book a professional AC vent and duct clean within a fortnight.

Priority 7: Outdoor Spaces

Terraces, balconies, pool decks and garden furniture all need attention. Start with a dry sweep, then a hose-down. Patio cushions usually need washing or brushing off. For villas with pools, check the filter system and vacuum the pool bottom where fine sand will have settled.

What Not to Do

Do not use feather dusters – they just move dust around. Do not dust a room with the AC on full – the airflow redeposits dust instantly. Do not vacuum carpets before dusting higher surfaces. Do not leave window tracks for “later” – they turn into reservoirs that re-dust the room every day for weeks.

What This Looks Like in Ras Al Khaimah

RAK sits directly in the path of summer shamals, and coastal areas like Al Marjan Island and Mina Al Arab face additional salt-laden winds. Inland properties around Al Dhait, Al Qusaidat and Khuzam see finer, more penetrating dust. The priorities above apply everywhere, but coastal villas need an extra exterior rinse with fresh water to prevent salt-and-sand combinations from etching glass and metalwork.
